Hi, I'm Marty!

I love software!

I create software both for work and for pleasure. My love for programming started in high school when I randomly joined a web design elective class.

Most of my professional experience is in the backend, specializing in interfacing between web, relational databases, and other microservices.

Right now I'm immersing myself in open cloud tech, self-hosting, and everything else related to digital sovereignty.

I also enjoy dipping my toes in lightweight frontend work and game development.

I started my career at Ultraware BV around 2020, where, among other projects, I worked on EDU-IX, a conglomeration of microservices, databases and websites that coordinates the assignment, payment and distribution of learning materials for Dutch school students. The system interfaces between publishing and distribution companies, schools, and students, with high requirements for user data privacy.

At Control D, a privacy-oriented company, I rewrote the backend for DNS analytics, ingesting, enriching and storing thousands of DNS queries per second while fulfilling data protection regulations across the globe. I turned a rigid API into a flexible backend that allowed for fast iteration on the frontend only. I also designed the SIEM pipeline for streaming DNS logs to B2B customers such as Github.

Right now I'm looking to move beyond only writing software - I want to make an impact in the digital sovereignty space. Feel free to contact me with exciting opportunities, see my contact below!

timventory is a custom inventory system that I built for a good friend using Django, used to optimize shipping inventory for a warehouse. It's closed-source. My first real production project, and the reason I decided to pursue a career in software. Thanks Tim!

streepjes is a small custom Point-of-Sale application I created for the cantine of my former student sports assocation, which I also administer and is still being used today. It's full-stack application written in Go/JS with a postgres backend.

You can find many silly libraries and other fun experiments on my Codeberg.

Languages
I've worked the most with Go, though I also love Rust and Zig. Python, Java or PHP will do for legacy work. JS/TS is a necessary evil.

Development
I enjoy the CLI and mostly use the helix editor. IDEs can be useful, but LSP and CLI skills are transferrable and versatile.

Containers
From CI/CD to my personal linux desktop, I love containers. I use Fedora Atomic powered by bootc as my OS, distrobox on the CLI, and compose or kubernetes for server deployments.

I love self-hosting, and self-hostable, open-source software in general.

I host nextcloud and other services on a VPS, and use various decentrally hosted platforms and participate in their communities.

Some of my favorites:

Nextcloud instead of Google Drive
Forgejo instead of GitHub
Mastodon instead of X
Lemmy instead of Reddit
